The wonder of “social media”…

Ok, I’m not going to write anything profound here about how great “Social Media” is.  Especially since it has been written up a TON of times already. :) I just wanted to comment on the wonder of it, as *I* see it on the recent “earthquakes in LA” breaking news.

I play on Plurk and Twitter (two of a few ’social media’ clients I play on!), and I do alot more reading than posting on both of them, to be sure.  Today I read the news of the recent earthquake in NE Los Angeles area on both of these Instant messaging clients, and was amazed how fast the news spread, and the support that went out to those who really experienced (felt) it!

Minutes before the news hit any of the bigger news reporting TV stations, the facts of this event, and the 4 to 6 after-shocks were already posted and talked about by “plurkers” and “Tweeters” all over the world. Links to weather sites, and “earthquake monitoring” sites were posted, and tons of supportive posts were flying over the Internet at impossible rates, all to keep everyone informed of the situation.

I love “Social Media” and how it has brought people together to actively participate in a “community” mind set, even if it is virtual!  One never knows when the opportunity will come up when you get to meet your “virtual friends” in the real world!  I do know, however, that being active in a Virtual environment has caused me to be even more outgoing in my Real environment!!

So, it is not all bad !!

Til the next post,

Yxes
